An Overview:
We first met Lestat in The Vampire Lestat as the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac narrates the tale of his own life and Lestat's evil deed toward him. Now, in The Vampire Lestat the tables are turned and Lestat tells what "really" happened in his own words.

Lestat has been portrayed as many things throughout Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles; a villain, a friend, a lover, but most of all an incredibly strong and mercurial vampire who can be a formidable foe or a loyal (in some points of view) friend. For those who heard about the vampire Lestat in the first of the Vampire Chronicles and wish to learn more, look no further.

In this narrative, we go back to Lestat's humble beginnings as a mortal man and how he became a vampire and began his ascent to power. Once an illiterate, penniless noble, Lestat hunts down a couple of older vampires to take their power as his own. He pursues his plans for becoming a rock star with a group named

The Vampire Lestat with plans to reveal the truth of vampires to the world and, finally, Lestat explains to eager readers how and why certain events took place between himself and his friends-turned-enemies Louis and Claudia.

There are a lot of discrepancies between the story line of The Vampire Lestat and Interview with the Vampire, but these are described as being two different views on the same story.

I suppose it's left up to the reader to decide which vampire to believe, or to just take the stories as they're presented…as very well-written, engaging stories about an entirely different world meshed with the world we know. If you are a fan of dark fantasy or have read and enjoyed Anne Rice's books before, you won't want to miss The Vampire Lestat.

The Narration:
This complex story is dramatized by narrator Michael York , whose smooth voice has the ability to bring out Lestat's professed innocence as well and has the ability to sound fittingly sinister when needed; I believe few could have given a better performance for this particular story.
