What is an audio book?
An audio book is simply a digitally recorded version of the printed paper book being read out aloud by a narrator. The narrator may be the author, a professional narrator or an actor. Often the recording may use a cast of narrators supported and embellished by the use of special sound effects.
In which formats are audio books available?
The audio format may be in various forms to suit the many types of playback devices in the market today. In the past tapes were common formats, e.g. cassettes, currently compact discs are still a popular medium as are MP3 and other digital variations.
How can MP3 audio books be played?
MP3 is simply a compression technique that makes it possible for reducing the size of the audio book (sometimes by as much as 80%) compared to that of cassettes or CDs. Most modern CD players support the MP3 technology, they an also be played on any PC that has Microsoft’s Windows Media Player or other related software.
Do I need any software on my computer to listen to audiobooks?
Audiobooks can be downloaded or played on any personal computer or portable listening device that supports Microsoft Windows Media Player v9 or a huge range of 3rd party audio playback software
Can I listen to an audiobook in the car?
Most certainly, as a rule of thumb, if a device is capable of playing music, then it is most likely capable of playing audio books also. For more information contact your device manufacturer for specific requirements.
What is Podcasting?
A Podcast is an audio program that can be downloaded to your computer.When you subscribe to an Audible Podcast, future editions of that audio program will be automatically downloaded to your computer into the podcast receiving program (“podcatcher”) of your choice, such as iTunes. You can then listen to your Podcast on your computer or transferit to a mobile audio device, like the AppleĀ® iPodĀ®, and listen on the go. (An iPod is not required to listen to podcasts but combined with iTunes music management software, provides an excellent listening experience.)
As an audio book club member can I get my books in any order?
By default, your Rental Shelf will send selections based on your priority, then on availability. If your top selection isn’t available, the Rental Shelf will move down your list to the next available selection. If nothing is available, an email will be sent to let you know. However, if you would like to receive your titles in a particular order (ie books in a series); you can use the Set Dependency feature on your Rental.
What is the difference between a regular CD and an MP3 CD and how do I know if my CD player will play them?
The difference is in the way the information is stored on the CD. Most new CD players will play MP3 CDs. To be sure, consult the owner’s manual or the manufacturer of your CD player.
Can I cancel my membership at any time?
Yes. No restrictions. All you need to do is log in, click on My Account, and choose Edit Subscription. You can always cancel, even if you’re on a prepaid plan.
What is a dramatized audio book?
A dramatized audio book, as the name implies, is a dramatized “play-life” version of the printed book, with usual full cast, music and sound effects.
What if I want a title that isn’t in your inventory?
After you have logged into your account, you can find the ‘Request a Book’ link in the bottom left corner of the home page. We love new books, and will quickly purchase a title if it is available to us. You’ll be notified automatically when the book comesin.
Is it true that shipping rented audio books is free both ways?
Yes, the shipping is absolutely free both ways right to your door when you’re a member of the unlimited rental program.

How long before I receive an audio book on Cd as an audio book club member?
For rental members, shipping takes roughly 2-5 days via first class mail. Purchased audio books can be sent via media or priority mail. Media mail will take roughly 10-14 days, and priority mail is generally 2-5 days from the day your title is sent.
How do I know which version of Windows Media Player I have installed?
There are two ways you can determine which version of Windows Media Player you have installed: click on Help/About/Windows Media Player.
Can I listen to my audiobooks on a portable listening device?
Yes. Audiobooks are compatible with a wide range of portable listening devices. See Supported Portable Listening Devices.
Should I download or buy audio books on Cd?
This is purely a user preference, buying an audio book on Cd is suitable for those that do not have access to a computer or the internet. It would obviously suit those that would prefer there audio book ready to play with out the need to burn a copy to Cd themselves. Downloading affords a great deal of flexibility for the user allowing a multitude of various options in file formats to suit all kinds of playback scenarios.
What is an unabridged audio book?
An unabridged audio book is one that was narrated word for word. In such an audio book, nothing was removed from the printed book. It has the exact content with that of the printed book, albeit in audio format.
What is an abridged audio book?
An abridged audio book is one that is shortened and doesn’t contain the exact word for word narration as the printed book.
What is a dramatized audio book?
A dramatized audio book, as the name implies, is a dramatized “play-life” version of the printed book, with usual full cast, music and sound effects.
Can audio books be purchased online?
Audio books are increasingly being purchased online due to the convenience and speed of delivery offered when buying online.
