I’m back from Washington DC! It was an amazing trip! I’ll share some of my stories on our forum, so feel free to check in with me there.
For now, I want to tell you a story about audiobooks and computer crashes. It is a very grim tale, indeed…
Free Audio Books – Just Click Here!
Once upon a time I received an email telling me that I could get audio books for free. Actually, I get these daily.
The emails are full of enticing statements about how digital audio books are popular and wonderful and how I can download the latest titles cheap or free! There are generally several exclamation points involved, as well as exciting phrasing and insistent that I click right away to learn more!!!
Something for Nothing?
This is a trap. Just like in a fairy tale, there is a big bad wolf hiding under the covers, just waiting for the unsuspecting little girl. I’m not sure why, but people still seem to think that you can get something for nothing. Well, I suppose you can, but sometimes it isn’t what you really want.
Beware of Scams
My kids fall for similar scams with music downloads. I’ve told them time and again that if they want music, just BUY it. They, however, learn of websites from their friends and they download questionable programs, torrents, and like a crappy prize in the crackerjack box, viruses.
They have tanked several computers this way and I have spent hours trying to clean up after their messes. I have finally informed them that next time I’m taking the computer.
Free May Be Expensive
The only safe, legal, free audio books out there are either those in the public domain or those being offered via a promotion by legitimate sites such as Audible. Torrents, sites that are nonsensical and littered with links, and blogs promising free digital book downloads after a series of “offers” are viewed, are very likely to deliver a virus and not the content you want.
Even if you eventually end up with the book, you will also probably have opened the door to a host of email spammers, spyware, malware, and viruses.
Like every good fairy tale, there is a moral to this story. If you really want the latest bestselling audio book, buy it. If you can’t afford it, get it from the library or save for it. If you try to get it by questionable means you will get much more than you bargained for… and not in a good way.
