I am a huge reader. While I tend towards literary and mystery/suspense, I am open to pretty much any kind of book. Lately, I have been looking for lighter fare. With that in mind, I went on a search for humorous title in audiobooks.
Looking for the Funny:
After just a click or two on Audible.com, I discovered six separate categories of comedy available on audio. Classic American, Classic British, Memoirs, Satire, Stand-Up & Jokes, and Storytelling offer hundreds of titles for those looking for a laugh.
Classic American & Classic British:
This category features predominantly performance audio rather than books. Classic radio show recordings of Abbot and Costello, digitally premastered from the 1940s episodes, including the classic “Who’s on First” are all presented for download.
More contemporary humor is offered via National Lampoon Radio Hour Classics featuring John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and more.
As in the Classic American category, most titles are performance recordings. Many recordings of The 99p Challenge, a panel-type game; Deep Trouble, a sub-sea sitcom; and various recordings of Milton Jones’ radio shows are all featured.
Memoirs & Satire:
I adore David Sedaris. He is an author who simply makes me smile. When You Are Engulfed in Flames was a brilliant read and to hear the author recount his essays in the audio version is very entertaining.
Stephen Colbert is the king of satire. He skewers politicians on a daily basis, so to hear him narrate his I Am America (And So Can You!) is hilarious. His sarcasm and delight in simply declaring himself right and all others wrong is a fun blast to all of the windbag pundits on the news.
On a completely different plane, or perhaps planet, resides the satire of Christopher Moore. His books are outrageous. I recently listened to Fool, a retelling of King Lear through the eyes of his fool, Pocket. I would advise listeners to avoid listening to while drinking lest you find your beverage spurting across the room as you laugh.
Stand-Up & Jokes & Storytelling:
Ricky Gervais is prominently featured in this category. Recordings of his performances and Xfm radio broadcasts highlight his exceptional skill as a comedian.
Storytelling headliners include Dave Barry, who has the ability to take everyday situations and point out the absurdities; and the late Erma Bombeck, whose well-known The Grass is Always Greener over the Septic Tank, points out that life may be tough… but it’s always funny.
So if you find yourself in need of a laugh, do not sit through another bad sitcom, grab a comedy audio book!
