I get email coupons from Barnes and Noble all the time. Recently, after reading the small print, I wondered why the coupons cannot be applied toward eBook purchases. By now, you know me well enough to know that I had to ask them.
Thank you for your email regarding applying coupons to eBooks: The order process for placing eBook order is streamlined and currently doesn’t allow coupons to be applied to eBooks. Please be advised that the terms and conditions at the moment of coupons is that they cannot be applied to (eBooks)

I wasn’t really satisfied with that. I mean, really? I can’t use coupons because the checkout is streamlined? Does that make any sense at all? I tried again and got received the following response:
Thank you for your inquiry regarding applying your Barnes & Noble: Membership discount to eBook purchases: Because our eBook prices are deeply discounted from the Publisher’s List Price, the Barnes & Noble Member’s discount and coupons are not available on the purchase of digital content (including but not limited to digital books, magazines, and periodicals); certain digital devices; downloadable Audiobooks in MP3 or any other format: We hope you find this information helpful and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Coupons No Good for Digital Content
First of all, my question was about coupons, but now that she mentions it, I would like to use my Barnes and Noble Membership discount as well… I pay for that annual membership and seems like I should be able to use on whatever I please. Huh. So, B&N coupons cannot be used on digital content because they have an inefficient and inadequate checkout process and the already discounted prices cannot be further lowered by coupons or memberships because they said so. Am I the only one bothered by this?
Why Am I Even a Member?
Will I Renew My Membership?
Okay, so maybe 40% off of an eBook bestseller is a lot to ask, but how about throwing a bone to customers who have paid for membership? By the way, I don’t think I’ll be renewing my membership this year. Last year I went ahead with it because they advertised $50 in coupons after you pay your $25 fee.
Well, the coupons weren’t just dollars off of any purchase as they had been in the past. They were for specific items. Items I did not want. I felt ripped off. Now I can’t even use coupons for eBooks. Why Am I Even a Member?
My husband bought me a Kindle for my birthday. Looks like my media will all be from Amazon from now on.
