Main Body:

In Mary, Mary, FBI agent Alex Cross has his well deserved vacation interrupted by seeming incongruous events. His ex-wife wins custody of their son and he is called in to investigate a series of horrifying murders in Hollywood alongside the LAPD.

The first murder victim, a popular actress, was found so badly injured that identifying her was difficult. A local gossip columnist receives a series of emails with the signature “Mary Smith”. These notes claim responsibility for this murder as well as several others, including excruciating detail about the murders. Her emails speak at length about the families involved, especially the children. Clearly she has to be the murderer, or is she?

James Patterson is one amazing author. Other than a few minor fact checking mistakes, the book kept my attention with no need to suspend my sense of disbelief. He holds the NY Times record for bestselling Titles and is the only author to have ever occupied the top slots in both adult and children’s chapter books simultaneously. I am really impressed with him on a professional level as well as an author.

The book, by itself, would receive a wholehearted five stars. However, I’d have to give this audiobook four stars. Even though I enjoyed the book, I found the use of three different readers made the book hard to follow. Despite that, I think it’s worth the effort to follow the story.
