An Overview:

In Hard Eight Stephanie Plum gets deep into a web of danger and deceit, all for trying to check on the granddaughter of her mother’s neighbor.

Main Body:

The trouble starts when Stephanie does what her mother asks and checks up on the granddaughter of Mabel Markowitz, her mother’s neighbor. It turns out that Evelyn Soder has taken off with her daughter and is on the run. The problem is that her disappearing is giving her former husband a chance to cash in on a child custody bond, which would pull the house right out from under old Mabel.

Stephanie takes up the case to track down Evelyn then finds out that it seems a lot of people don’t want her to find Evelyn. She gets a warning to stay away from Eddie Abruzzi, a less then reputable local businessman that she brushes off. But he doesn’t want to take no for an answer. Soon, Abruzzi’s lackeys are leaving gifts for her to try and get her to reconsider, snakes and tarantulas, and making other threats.

This is when her men jump into help with the case. Joe Morelli, her cop and on again off again love interest is working the case from the legal side. On the other side of things is the gorgeous Ranger, a dark and mysterious man who can usually get anything done, although it’s often better if you don’t ask how.

The book was an enjoyable read if you like to follow along as everything goes wrong for Stephanie Plum. The only problem is there may be too many of the same jokes that are tagging along from book to book. It was almost predictable that something was going to happen to any car or cars Stephanie came near in this book as well as a number of the other ongoing jokes. While they are fun, it would be nice to be a little more surprised.

The Narration:

Lorelei King does a great job with this book. She has the Jersey sound down and does justice to all the characters in the book, making it easy to sort out who’s who, even during fast paced dialogue
