A Salty Piece of land is a great tale of a former cowboy who is traveling his path in life. It’s a colorful tale created in almost lyrical form by singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett.
Before you listen to A Salty Piece of Land you need to kick back, relax and let go of the rest of the world. This is proper Jimmy Buffett style and the author would likely expect nothing less for this book. The story follows a former cowboy named Tully Mars. Mars is taking off on a life voyage which could, and will, lead him anywhere and everywhere, generally all over the Caribbean.
Tully could well be the Buffett Song ‘Pirate Looks at 40′ come to life as he searches for the travels and treasures of life. He is not just a retired cowboy on sabbatical. He also has his share of demons to deal with. He has a bit of an ugly past he is trying to avoid, but he and his horse are always able to stay one step ahead of those who would slow them down.
If you are looking for a major mystery or a thriller, this is not the book for it. Tully’s adventures are mostly passive, but are more about him exploring the world through the people in it. He encounters a number of interesting locals in all the locations throughout the book and those locals are the spice of life in each of the sites he tours.
This book is a nice leisurely ride through a fun tale from the mind of Buffett. If you have ever wondered how his mind works and where all those songs you love came from, this book will give you a bit of a peak into how he thinks. It’s a relaxed pace and you can easily just let the day melt away while reading.
John David Souther is the narrator for this book and his voice seems to fit perfectly, almost melodically, with the words of the book and bringing the story
