You know how it is, nine times out of ten, the book is better than the movie.

There’s simply not enough time in an average movie to thoroughly explore the inner workings and motivations of the characters.

There are some new movies out that are based on audio books and I’m curious as to how that stack up.

Movies Better Than the Book

Once in a while, there comes a movie that manages to do things very well… even – dare I say it – better than the book? My favorite example is Shoeless Joe by WP Kinsella. The book was a snoozer for me, but Field of Dreams was a wonderful movie. Another is Forrest Gump, written and narrated by Winston Groom. The movie, with Tom Hanks, made Forrest sweet and innocent. In the book he was more streetwise and less likeable.

I had no idea that it was based on a book!

The Town

Books Into Movies The TownAnyway, recently my husband and I actually got to go to a movie on our own! Parents out there will understand why this is so exciting to me. Anyway, we saw The Town, starring Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner. It was really quite a good movie. I had no idea that it was based on a book!

The audio version is narrated by Donnie Wahlberg, who sounds great in the sample. Apparently the book was originally published under the title, Prince of Thieves, but this reissue, timed to match the movie release, was renamed. I don’t know if I’ll spend the time on the book…

The American

Another recent movie, The American, starring George Clooney, is also based on a book written by Martin Booth and narrated by Ralph Cosham. This is spy novel that was previously published as A Very Private Gentleman. The thriller is based on the mysterious life of Signor Farfalla, a resident of a small Italian town. I must admit, I am not a big fan of spy novels. I’m more likely to see the movie.

A Single Man

Although it is not currently in theatres, I am intrigued by A Single Man, written by Christopher Isherwood and narrated by Simon Prebble. The movie stars Colin Firth, whom I love. The story is that of a gay man who loses his partner suddenly and tries desperately to cling to the routines of his everyday life. I’ve seen the previews and am very interested in both the book and the movie. I’m thinking of ordering it on Movies on Demand the next time the children aren’t home. Oh. Right. They’re always home… Darn. Guess I’ll have to read the book instead.
