Andy Weir’s debut novel The Martian has taken the science fiction world by storm, or rather by a dust storm. Weir originally self-published the novel only to have Crown Publishing Group purchase the rights in 2014 after hearing the story pitched as “Apollo 13 meets Castaway.” True to his pitch, Weir takes his reader’s on a journey through space and survival.
Usually when I read a book, I know exactly how I feel about it, what I liked and what I didn’t like, which bits made me thing, and which I found maddeningly cliched. But this book was different, somehow. I was unable to come down on one side or the other, to decide whether I loved it or just wanted to throw it out the window. Either way, I couldn’t stop reading. It’s a book that many people buy, or tell themselves that they might read someday, but because of it’s very left, more often than not is only used as a paperweight.
