This year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences increased the number of Best Picture nominees from five to ten.
Of these ten, four are adaptations of books. This always makes me wonder… Should I read the audio book, see the movie, or both?
The Blind Side. The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game was written by Michael Lewis and narrated by Stephen Hoye (unabridged). The story centers around one of the 13 children of a crack-addicted mother. When he begins to attend school and play football, he meets a family whose love transforms his life. Sandra Bullock stars in the movie and has earned an Actress in a Leading Role nomination.
An Education. An Education is a memoir written by Lynn Barber. It is currently not available in audio. It details the author’s experiences beginning in 1960. At 16, she embarked on an affair with an older man that nearly wrecked her life. The film has earned Carey Mulligan an Actress in a Leading Role nomination, as well as one for Best Adapted Screenplay by Nick Hornby.
Precious.Push by Sapphire (narrated by the author) is a novel that presents the brutally honest story of 16 year old Precious Jones who is pregnant with her father’s child. Thanks to a determined teacher, Precious becomes inspired to learn to read and write her feelings in a diary. Other Oscar nominations include Lee Daniels for Best Director, Gabourey Sidibe for Actress in a Leading Role, Mo’Nique for Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Film Editing.
Up in the Air.Up in the Air by Walter Kim and narrated by Sean Runnette is the story of Ryan Bingham, a Career Transition Counselor. Basically, he fires people. This job has him flying constantly and racking up frequent flyer miles. He hates his job, but is hesitant to resign and move on to a mysterious consulting firm without reaching his goal of one million frequent flyer miles.
Oscar nominations, in addition to Best Picture are Best Director for Jason Reitman, Best Actor for George Clooney, Best Supporting Actress for both Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Personally, I want to read An Education and Precious. I want to see the movie Up in the Air. The Blind Side isn’t really on my list… and I am NOT a Sandra Bullock fan, so I don’t think I’ll be doing either. Which will you be reading?
