D ennis Lehane is the author of some incredible works of fiction.

You may be surprised to realize that you recognize some of his titles – they were made into major motion pictures. Check out some of his titles available on audiobook

Mystic River:

You may have seen the award-winning movie, Mystic River, with Sean Penn and Tim Robbins.

What you may not know, is that it was based on an award winning novel by Dennis Lehane (narrated by David Strathairn). This is the first of Lehane’s novels that I read. It is the story of three boys who were best friends. When a stranger in a car stops, one boy gets in.

The aftermath changes them forever. The events of the past affect them in different ways when they cross paths over a murder case as adults. This book is a fantastic character-driven novel. I highly recommend it.

The Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro Series:

Lehane has written a series of 5 books featuring Kenzie and Gennaro. The most famous is Gone, Baby, Gone (read by Robert Lawrence), which was also made into a movie featuring Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Morgan Freeman, and Ed Harris.

Kenzie and Gennaro are private investigators located in working-class Boston. Their stories are gritty and provocative and totally captivating. Try one…

Shutter Island:

Shutter Island (narrated by Tom Stechschulte) is currently being made into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1954, a US Marshall goes to Shutter Island, to a hospital that houses the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. The plot has so many twists and turns that you might get dizzy reading it – but it is so worth it!

I read so many mysteries that I usually know what’s coming. This one had me clueless. I loved it! I actually read this over the course of one day during an ice storm when we had no power. Take my word for it, even if you don’t have an ice storm, you won’t be able to stop listening.

The Given Day:

I have The Given Day (read by Michael Boatman) set aside to read this winter. The story unfolds in Boston at the end of World War I and features families, revolutionaries, anarchists, immigrants, and citizens as they struggle through a tumultuous time. It’s next to my bed, just waiting for the first snow…
