A summary of current bestsellers for July 2012
1. Creole Belle: A Dave Robicheaux Novel, Book 19
Lauded by critics and readers alike as another stunner from Creole Belle, this book takes off from where the last book of the Dave Robicheaux series ended.
Dave, broken but definitely not out, is recovering in New Orleans when Tee Jolie Melton, a Creole girl, pays him a visit. The girl soon disappears, but before she does that, she leaves an iPod for Dave with the country song “Creole Belle” playing on it.
The song permeates Dave’s senses completely and he becomes obsessed with it and with the memory of the girl who visited him. Unable to get the song or Tee Jolie Melton out of his mind, Dave goes looking for her sister, who is later discovered inside a big block of ice somewhere in the Gulf. In the meantime, an incident takes place in the Gulf that threatens the existence of the land and people Dave is committed to protect.
2. Gone Girl: A Novel
Labeled as compulsively readable, this book is about a marriage gone horribly, horribly wrong. While preparations are on to celebrate Nick and Amy Dunne’s 5th wedding anniversary, the wife mysteriously disappears. Nick’s behavior, on the other hand, is hardly that of a husband who wants his wife back.
If anything, he is found daydreaming, sometimes too loudly for his own good, about his wife’s dead body. Everyone thinks he murdered his wife. He, however, is adamant that he didn’t. If Nick is not guilty, who is, and where is his beautiful wife? And what secret lies in the gift box found hidden in Amy’s closet…
Gillian Flynn’s latest book is ingeniously plotted and an absolute must for people who love thrillers.
3. Shadow of Night
In her much-awaited new book, Shadow of Night, Deborah Harkness takes readers on a thrilling journey through a charming world of magical discoveries, alchemy, and time travel.
Starting from where A Discovery of Witches left off, this book is about the main protagonists, Diana and Matthew, plunging deep into a world of deceit, spies, and the mystical School of Night. Here, Matthew is compelled to deal with a past that he believed he had buried forever, while Diana must quickly find a witch who can teach her magic. With the mystery of the enchanted manuscript Ashmole 782 intensifying, Diana and Matthew must act quickly.
4. The Fallen Angel
After his last operation, which he barely survived, Gabriel Allon, an Israeli agent, takes refuge in the Vatican. One morning, he is asked by his Holiness Pope Paul VII’s secretary, Monsignor Luigi Donati, to come to St. Peter Basilica, where a woman is lying dead.
The police think it is a suicide, but Gabriel suspects murder, and so does Donati. A police enquiry will be scandalous for the Church and so the job of unearthing the truth is given to Gabriel.
Gabriel finds that the dead woman learnt something she was not supposed to know – a secret about an international crime organization that is stealing and selling timeless treasure. However, the real purpose of this enterprise is not greed, but to execute a subvert operation that will destroy the world.
5. Kill Decisions
Linda McKinney, a myrmecologist, finds herself in the middle of a battle with a faceless enemy who is attacking America and killing its people using unmanned and automated drones that can find, identify, and destroy targets on their own without human interference.
Why? Because she, although indirectly and unknowingly, was responsible for this apocalyptic event. It was her research that was forcefully enlisted by strange, unknown forces to create an army of unmanned drones. By her side is Odin, a Special Ops soldier, who, it seems, knows the ways of the faceless enemy that is hell bent to annihilate mankind.
Who will win? The man or the technology he created…
