Do you want to dive into the wonderful world of downloaded audio books, but feel a little intimidated by the process? Fear not! By choosing titles from Audible.com or Amazon.com, not only can you shop from a huge selection; you can have your favorites loaded onto your mobile device in just a few minutes and take them with you wherever you go.

This is true even if you want to burn some books onto CD for your mother-in-law, put some on your Kindle for a long road trip and gift some to your brother for his fancy new iPad. No matter what kind of device you are using, the download process is short and sweet

1) Choose a book.

This step is a lot of fun for anyone who loves books and listening to them. Shopping for a new book online is so rewarding because you can find just about anything your heart desires in the way of reading material. You can search Audible.com by narrator, author, title or keyword. You can browse a variety of genres, select a book according to its price or learn which titles have been the most popular downloads recently.

You can also see what Oprah is recommending and find books that have won industry awards. If you are accustomed to shopping for books on Amazon, you can stick with your old habits. Simply click on the link in a book description that says Audible Audio Edition, when you find a title you want, and you can buy it in downloadable form. You can even listen to a sample of the book before you decide to buy.

2) Install the Audible Download Manager.

This step only needs to be done once. When you have the audible software manager installed on your PC or Mac, you’ll be able to use it over and over to add content to your mobile devices. From the Audible.com home page, simply click on the link at the top that says Software. This will take you to the Manager page. There, you will choose whether you want to use Windows or Mac as your basic downloading vehicle. (Don’t worry if you have both Windows and Mac-based devices. You can use them all together.

Just choose the one you will use most often for this step.) If you put the download manager on your computer, you will have the option of listening to your content directly from your PC or loading it on multiple portable players. The Audible Manager has a file size that is less than 1mb, and should take only seconds to install.

Click the “My Library” link in the green navigation bar at the top of the Audible page. There, you should see the titles of the books you have purchased. Click the orange Download It button to the right of the listing and the process will begin.

An Audible Downloads window will open that allows you to see the time remaining. Of course, titles with a playing time of several hours will take longer to download than shorter selections, but even The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, which runs for more than 40 hours, downloads in about 14 minutes with an average DSL connection.

When this process is complete, you should see a green check mark in the column under “Downloaded.” Your new book will stay in your online library indefinitely. Therefore, if you ever lose it from your computer or a mobile player, you can download it again.

Audible supports hundreds of different mobile devices including phones, PDAs, GPS systems, MP3 players and more. If you are doubt about whether your particular player will work, you can click the Device Center link at the top of the home page to find out for sure. When you are ready to transfer your purchase, plug your gadget into your computer via a USB connection and launch the Audible Manager

You should see your device listed in the lower left hand corner. When you select it, the manager will begin reading it and will display the device’s available memory in a pie chart on the lower right corner. Next, highlight the title you want to transfer in the Library window at the top of the page.

Then click the Add to Device button. A status window will open so you can see the transfer in progress. When the process is finished, you’ll see the recently transferred book in the lower center pane of the manager window.

5) Disconnect your device and enjoy your audio book.

You are now ready to listen to your choice when you are driving, gardening, exercising or carrying out any other activity. You can come back to the Audible Manager and transfer the book to as many devices as you like, or you can listen directly from your computer.

In case you run into a snag with any of these steps, Audible.com has a terrific Help section that can help you iron out the wrinkles.
