Ten Books Oprah Thinks You Should Read

Seriously, how does Oprah have time to read these books? I wonder just how far in advance she gets her advance reading copies. Either that or somebody is giving her Spark Notes summaries. I don’t know for sure, but she is at it again. On the O Magazine web site, she lists the 10 Books to Read in October 2010. Here are the details of the 10 books/audiobooks she recommends. Note that some titles are not yet available. Fall of Giants: The Century Trilogy, Book 1 by Ken Follett and narrated by John Lee. Described as a historical epic....

Government Censorship Prior to Banned Books Week

As I mentioned in my last column, it is banned book week. I hope you will all take the time to open your minds with one of the challenged books out there. There were murmurings across the Internet all week about Oprah’s latest Book Club selection. Well before her announcement on Friday, speculation was running rampant over whether she would actually choose to give Jonathan Franzen a second chance after their famous falling-out 9 years ago. In 2001, Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club was in full swing and fans couldn’t wait to see what books she would endorse by choosing them for her book club. Any title she chose was guaranteed to go bestseller in the weeks after the announcement. Once her sticker went on the books, they sold like crazy. Then she...
