Stop Smoking with Audiobooks

by on August 1, 2010

Yesterday, I told you about how Stephen Fry used audiobooks as a part of his weight loss plan. That got me thinking about other ways that audiobooks might help people. I’ve never been a smoker, but everyone in my family was and they all struggled with quitting. I wish these audio books had been around to help them!

Stop Smoking for Good

Written and read by Max Kirsten offers his proven technique for quitting. The author is a clinical hypnotherapy and NLP Master Practitioner. By presenting the information in a precisely formulated way, Kirsten can help even the most stubborn smoker give up his pack. I’ve done some research on NLP, and it’s likely that this is an effective strategy.

Stop Smoking Easily:

Is written and read by David Laing, who is also an NLP Master Practitioner. I am wondering how much hypnosis is involved, as the summary actually warns against listening while operating machinery or domestic appliances. This really makes me giggle. Sorry. I’ll get back to business.

Stop SmokingStop Smoking Forever:

Subliminal Self Help for Women (there is also one for Men) has no credited author or narrator. This is certainly a step down from the previous two books. First of all, subliminal basically means that the content is below the threshold of consciousness. This seems a little creepy and scary to me, but I read a lot of thrillers, so this might be my paranoia. Secondly, there is no one credited with writing the thing. How do you know if the person who tossed this together is a professional or someone’s secretary who cobbled together bits and pieces off the Internet? I’d pass on this one.

Zen Hypnosis: Stop Smoking

Is written and read by Dr. Stephen Simpson. From what I can see, he is a doctor, but I have no clue what kind. General practitioner? Clinical psychologist? No idea. Anyway, his process is to offer a Zen hypnosis session to learn to meditate and use different parts of your brain. Can you hear the skepticism in my typing?

Stop Smoking Forever by Glenn Harrold

Who is Glenn Harrold? I have no idea. No creds are offered. Once again the summary simply says that hypnotherapy is involved. I’m pretty sure I would want someone with credentials to hypnotize me so I don’t end up doing the chicken dance in the middle of the highway.

check the credentials

Do you see a pattern here? There are many digital books out there that claim to be able to help you kick the habit. I am not endorsing any one book, but I strongly suggest that if you are serious about using one, check the credentials of the author. Make sure he or she is appropriately certified to give the hypnosis/NLP therapy. And if they are using these techniques, they should be narrating their own works because delivery is also very important. Good luck!

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
