Vampire Audio Book Alternatives – If You Can’t Beat Them, Bite Them!

by on July 2, 2010

If you don’t have a teen in your house, you may not have heard that the latest Twilight-based movie, Eclipse, came out this week. It is apparently populated by hunky, sparkly, metro sexual vampires and other supernatural beings with great abs.

Teen girls everywhere are swooning… and reading vampire audio books. The series, written by Stephenie Meyer, has sold more than 100 million copies in various formats.

If you aren’t a teen, but still want to read about vampires, there are other alternatives.

Vampire Audio Book Bloodsucking Fiends by Christopher MooreBloodsucking Fiends by Christopher Moore

Narrated by Susan Bennett this is a humorous take on vampires. Jody wakes up one day to find that she has been transformed into a vampire. She tries to adapt with the help of Safeway night clerk, Tommy. This is a decidedly darkly funny tale of love and blood. The story continues in You Suck and Bite Me. I enjoy Christopher Moore’s humor and these books are great.

Vampire Fiction by Charlaine Harris

Charlaine Harris also writes series Vampire fiction. Her Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries are the basis for the successful television show, True Blood. The first of the series, Dead Until Dark, narrated by Johanna Parker, sets the stage and introduces the characters. I read the first two books of the series and stopped. I’m just not crazy about Harris’s writing style. It reads a little too much like Chick Lit for me. I do, however enjoy the TV series.

In fact, several of the vampire series seem to be focused on the romantic and otherwise “chick” variety. Scanning the covers of several popular series, I see women with read lips, sexy clothes, and sensual couples biting each other. What the heck is this? I think that if you want to escape the Twilight trend, you may have to go back a few years…

Vampire Audio Book Salem’s Lot by Stephen KingSalem’s Lot by Stephen King

Narrated by Ron McLarty) this was the first vampire book that I ever read. It scared me. Isn’t that what reading about vampires is supposed to do? This one tapped into fear in a huge way.

What about Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice – another vampire book that was also incredibly frightening? While it did offer some erotic moments, there was nothing mushy about Lestat or Louis. I didn’t lust after the characters. I was afraid of them.

Reviews of The Passage by Justin Cronin

Read by Edward Herrmann this indicates that the virals (vampires) are not sparkly or cute either. My son is reading it now and I will be picking it up soon. I’ll let you know.

The bottom line: If you are looking for SCARY, try King or Rice. If you are looking for funny, try Christopher Moore. If you are looking for chick lit, try Harris or The Black Daggar series from JR Ward.

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
