Stephen Fry Credits Audio Books for Weight Loss!

by on July 30, 2010

Stephen Fry is one of my favorite celebrities.

He’s amusing in his comedy sketches and books, intelligent when he speaks publicly, talented when he writes and narrates, and is one of those people who is genuinely appealing. (Yes, he is one of my favorites!)

Weight Loss

A fun fact that you may not be familiar with is that Fry credits audio books for his significant weight loss. Seriously. Fry lost nearly 6 stones, which equals about 84 pounds, improving his emotional and physical health.

How Did He Do It?

In addition to modifying his diet by removing starchy carbs and red meat, he has come to enjoy exercise. He says that listening to audiobooks when he’s walking has helped enormously.

Why He Likes Audiobooks

Working his way through a list of novels, Fry relishes his uninterrupted reading time. By wearing his noticeable earbuds, he finds that people are less likely to interrupt him – remember my very first article here about audio books as privacy tools? Listening to audiobooks also helps him to feel as though he is being productive and not wasting time while on the treadmill.

Stephen FryA Weight Loss Audiobook?

Whether or not Fry will write a book about his weight loss strategy remains to be seen, but in a brief search of forums dedicated to him, many hope that he will. I, for one would read it for the sheer joy of hearing his narration and anecdotes about the journey.

A Popular Narrator

If you happen to love Stephen Fry as much as I do, you might choose to listen to his recordings while exercising. I adore The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Stephen Fry has narrated it! That’s like getting double prizes at the fair! Want to read some classic literature? Fry has narrated collections of stories from Oscar Wilde, Anton Chekhov, and even some lovely children’s stories about Pooh and Paddington.

More Titles by Fry

Fry’s English Delight is a recording of the BBC Radio show in which Fry discusses the oddities of the English language. The episodes cover various topics such as sailing metaphors, gibberish, usage changes of words and phrases, elocution, and an investigation into the word ‘Hello’.

Lovers Of Language And Grammar Will Be Thrilled!

Montmorency: Thief, Liar, Gentleman by Eleanor Updale is another of Fry’s narrations. A twist of fate makes a petty thief into the most elusive burglar in Victorian London. All of the reviews praise the narration.

There are several more offerings from Fry on Audible. Be sure to check them out… on the treadmill or off.

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
