An Update for Fun Books for Kids

When my oldest was just beginning to read chapter books, he was crazy about the “Choose Your Own Adventure” series. In them, the reader had to make a choice about what the characters would do and then follow the instructions on what to read next. Each decision yielded a different story with one of several possible endings. He liked them because he could go back and change his decisions and create a whole new story each time.

I was looking at those books in the library recently with a friend who was looking for books for her young son. Interestingly, I just saw an article about the original series author, Edward Packard. He is releasing an updated version called “U-Ventures” for iPhone or iPad. These will be interactive apps, allowing readers to make choices, and the text is accompanied by special effects.

Cool Tip

I just ran across a solution to the problem of importing audiobooks on CD into iTunes. If you have tried to do this before, you know that the process is annoying because each CD has multiple small files and gives them random names in sequence. To prevent this, insert the CD and when it appears in iTunes answer “no” when asked if you wish to import the CD.

Then select all for the CD contents and select “join CD tracks” from the advanced menu. This will combine the files on the CD into one file. Make sure you name each CD so that you can keep them in sequence.  This will not work for CDs in iTunes, only new CDs that you are importing.

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
