Self-Publishing Welcomed in iPad Bookstore

by on June 1, 2010

Self-publishing is not a new idea. Many authors who do not have agents or have simply been turned away from publishing houses, have opted to use publish on demand services to publish their own works.

This week, Apple’s iTunes Connect program offers a section for authors to publish their content in ePub format so that it may be offered in the iBookstore.

Authors may can apply, but they must review the technical, content, and financial requirements before submitting their work.

the largest annual book trade fair in the US

iBookstore will become available to iPhone and iPod touch users with the OS 4 update this summer. Last week, all the buzz was about BookExpo America, the largest annual book trade fair in the US. Jon Stewart, Barbra Streisand, John Grisham, and more stars of the literary universe held discussions and presentations. Despite the boost in eBook sales, the overall mood at BEA was upbeat and hopeful for the publishing industry.

Appalled

Self-PublishingI was pretty much appalled when I read that the headmaster of prestigious Cushing Academy in Massachusetts was eliminating most of the books in the library in favor of moving over to digital formatting.

I know that the move is towards technology… but I don’t think there is anything nicer than the feel of a book in one’s hands. I know this is just one of such stories and that soon this will happen closer to home, but for now? I hope my kids have plenty of access to regular old books in school.

Audiobook Month!

June is Audiobook Month – will you Get Caught Listening? The campaign from the Audiobook Publishers of America shines the spotlight on audio books to increase awareness and popularity. The APA plans to have authors advocating for the medium, beginning on June 1. The APA will be using Twitter and Facebook initiatives as a part of the campaign.

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
