eReader Price Wars

by on June 23, 2010

Well, the iOS4 for the iPhone and iPod touch was released yesterday. This update will allow iPhone/iPod touch users to use the Apple iBooks app for eBook reading on their devices. I am not jumping up and down because my iPod touch is a first generation.

Yup, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the technology and bought it when it first came out. The result is that the current update is not compatible with my iPod. I am obsolete. iPhone and second and third generation touches can enjoy the nifty new features. I’ll just sit here and feel sorry for myself while you go download them.

iOS4 up date for the iPhone and iPod touch

eReaders and iPhone UpdateThe iOS4 upgrade provides users with the ability to add home screen wallpaper, something previously only accomplished by jailbreaking the device. iPhone 3GS and third generation iPod touches will have multitasking abilities. The abilities are dependent upon open apps and are controlled by a multitask toolbar. Folders for grouping apps are offered to clean up the homescreen. I am particularly jealous of this as I am forever rearranging the icons on different pages to keep them sorted by type.

Of course, iBooks is a big addition. The app must be downloaded separately from the upgrade for free. The app also supports reading PDF files, allows highlighting and notes, allows dictionary word searching, and bookmarks pages. I have read that jailbroken devices should NOT upgrade to iOS4. This will result in bricking your device (basically turning it into a useless hunk of brick).

EBook reader prices slashed!

eReaderLet the price wars begin! EBook reader prices were slashed yesterday for both Barnes & Noble’s Nook and Amazon’s Kindle. The Nook started the trend by offering a version with Wi-Fi only (no 3G) for $149. They then reduced their Wi-FI + 3G model to only $199. In response, Amazon quickly announced a Kindle price reduction.

Formerly $259, the Kindle with Global Wireless is now $189. I have wanted an eReader for some time and I have to admit, the significant price reductions are tempting. Really tempting. I wonder if the Wi-Fi version is in stock at BN stores… But then again, Amazon’s Kindle is compatible with titles from Audible.com… Maybe I need to do a little more research.

Just for fun, check out the following site: Book-a-Minute offers hilariously brief synopses of several books. Check out this condensed version of Twilight: “Edward Cullen: Hoo mama, I can’t decide whether to drink your blood or kiss you passionately. Bella Swan: That’s hot. THE END” Go to the site and read more silly ultra-condensed versions of your favorite books!

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
