Audio Book Sales on the Rise
The Association of American Publishers (AAP) announced that overall book sales increased 16.6% in March!
Digital book sales jumped 8.6% with total sales in March of $9.8 million, bringing the year-to-date increase to 14.7%.. Downloaded books jumped 29.3%. EBook sales were by far the most marked, with a 184.8% increase.
Technology and Literacy
Sad fact of the day: Kids today are more likely to own a mobile phone than a book. A study conducted by the National Literacy Trust indicated that 85.5% of 7-16 year-old students have a cell phone, while 72.6% own books. Even more startling is the fact that of the children in the 7-11 year old range, 79.1% have a cell phone and 72.7% have books.
Kids that young with mobile phones? Seriously? This is all part of a larger study that found that keeping as few as 20 books in the home can increase a child’s academic performance.
And there is no excuse for not having at least 20 books in a home. None.
Books, Mobile Phones and Children
Last year, a study performed in Australia concluded that mobile telephones made children more prone to making mistakes in life as well as making them less thoughtful. It would seem that even though technology is wonderful, it might just be harming our children in ways that were not expected. In my opinion, no child needs a cell phone until they are at least a teenager. And there is no excuse for not having at least 20 books in a home. None.
Audiobooks Twitter Project
A few months ago, I participated in the second Twitter audio book project with BBC Audiobooks America. This one was started by bestselling author, Meg Cabot. While I’m sure she didn’t expect her fashion agency starting sentence to turn out as Fashionably Undead, the results are fantastically funny – and free. Looking for a funny story of fashion, love, and zombies? Okay, even if you aren’t, this is incredibly fun…
