Today, I will introduce you to David Sedaris… and I’m pretty sure you’re going to love him as much as I do.
Some Really Catchy Titles and Great Covers!
Returning to my previous discussions this week, I must point out that David Sedaris’ books have both wonderful covers and titles. Take a look at a few:

In case you cannot read the last two titles, they are When You are Engulfed in Flames and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. How can those covers and titles NOT grab you?
Audio Books are Narrated by the Author!
Many of his books are collections of essays and one is, in fact only available in audio format. Live for Your Listening Pleasure is a collection of stories recorded during Sedaris’ US tour last year. It’s worth noting that these audiobooks are narrated by the author, whose delivery is full of wonderful sarcasm and eye rolls.
Truly, this is a wonderfully funny collection.
A Few Popular titles by Sedaris
Me Talk Pretty One Day provides insight into his childhood of speech therapy classes, guitar lessons that he took but did not want (taught by a midget), and performance art. Truly, this is a wonderfully funny collection. I loved reading When You Are Engulfed in Flames.
The cover art, incidentally, is a print of a famous Van Gogh painting. The author’s timing is perfect when he reads these essays that sometime wander into a stream of consciousness ramble that always ends up back on track and leaving me smiling. Meeting his family, through his eyes, is a special treat.
Not Suitable for Children
I should note that David Sedaris is writing for adults. There are sexual situations and some vulgarity and definitely topics not suitable for children, so listen with caution.
I’m very excited for his next book, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary with artwork by Ian Falconer of the wonderful children’s Olivia books. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a book for the kids, though. Based on one story’s summary, “Hello Kitty” involves a cat sitting through court-mandated AA meetings.
This collection of animal fables will also explore star-crossed lovers in “The Squirrel and the Chipmunk” and bureaucracy in “The Toad, the Turtle, and the Duck”. Knowing Sedaris, the results will be absurd… and fantastic.
