Get Ready to Laugh

Last week, I covered the Audie Award nominees for Audiobook of the Year. I posted a poll on our forum, looking for input on what other nominees you were interested in…

Please go vote! As of the writing of this entry, there was only one vote – for the humor category – so, as promised; I present to you the audio book nominees in the category of Humor.

It is interesting to note that all the nominees in the humor category are read by the authors. Quite honestly, I think this is a fantastic idea. Timing and presentation are a big part of the humor. Who better to read the stories as they were intended than the authors? They offer the inflections and tones that often simply make the story that much funnier.

I Shudder by Paul Rudnick

Audiobooks Spoken Word AudieAwards 2010 NomineesI Shudder is written by Paul Rudnick, known best for his plays, screenplays, and writing for Premiere magazine. In this collection of essays, he presents us with anecdotes of his observations on everything from his family to Hollywood, to Broadway. He has been compared to two of my favorites: David Sedaris and Augusten Burroughs. Obviously, I have to read this.

Garrison Keillor

Garrison Keillor offers Church People, skits, songs, and stories from A Prairie Home Companion. This collection’s subtitle is: The Lutherans of Lake Wobegon. This is Keillor’s standard fare. Drawn from his Lake Wobegon monologues, this is a compilation of religious-themed stories. I’m not a fan, but I understand his appeal.

I Drink for a Reason by David Cross

I Drink for a Reason is by David Cross, the fantastic actor behind the character “Tobias Funke” from Arrested Development (brilliant television show, by the way). First of all, this guy is a genius. I listened to the sample of him reading “Don’t Abandon Your Baby” and was simply cracking up. In fact, I laughed so hard I choked and my kids ran in to see if I was okay. Yes, it was that funny. Fans of mocking sarcasm… here’s your book. I know I’m going to read it.

Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You Anita Renfroe

Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You written by Anita Renfroe, a Christian comedian. Okay, am I the only one who had to read that phrase twice? I don’t know that I’ve ever read any Christian comedy… So I was very interested in checking out this book.

From what I listened to, this has the tone of a conversation. If you were sitting around chatting with a funny friend, this is what you might hear. This will garner some grins from women who can relate to the stories of epidurals and being a mother. Personally, I like my comedy edgier. My life is already a PG sitcom.

More Information that You Require by John Hodgman

More Information that You Require by John Hodgman is a collection of half-truths, lies, fake trivia, and other ridiculousness from the comedian most recognizable as the PC in the Apple commercials. The guy is just funny. And he has guest stars. I’m thinking this is a must-listen.

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
