New Audio Books: Lucid Intervals by Stuart Woods, The November Criminals by Sam Munson and More!

by on April 23, 2010

Some great  new books are coming out this week – especially as some are from best-selling authors. What’s new in audiobooks this week? I thought you’d never ask…

Lucid Intervals by Stuart Woods, read by Tony Roberts. Woods’ Stone Barrington is always entertaining. In this outing, the private investigator helps a former client protect his questionably legal windfall.

The November Criminals written and read by Sam Munson. Addison Schacht is a high school senior with a lot on his mind. Between college applications, drug sales, and a relationship that is friendship only and quite complicated, the last thing he needs is to become obsessed with the investigation into the murder of a classmate. And yet, he does. I have no idea why this sounds so appealing to me, but I enjoy dark humor and this sounds like it will be full of it.

The Double Comfort Safari Club by Alexander McCall SmithThe Double Comfort Safari Club by Alexander McCall Smith, read by Adjoa Andoh. This is the 12th novel in the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. In this outing, a personal crisis drives the story rather than a mystery. Not to worry, there is definitely something mysterious going on…. I tried picking up this series, but it just didn’t appeal to me. I know there are tons of fans that will be glad to read this one, though!

Eight Days to Live by Iris Johansen, read by Jennifer Van Dyck. The Eve Duncan forensic thriller, Blood Game included vampires. This outing introduces a fictional religious overtone into the mix. Eve’s adoptive daughter has a show of her work at a Paris art gallery and one of the portraits kicks off controversy from a cult. This kicks off a journey to find a religious artifact. I know Johansen has a huge following, but this is yet another author I have failed to pick up.

I have ammunition to shoot to back at those who ridicule those of us over 40.

The Secret Life of the Grown-Up Brain: The Surprising Talents of the Middle-Aged Mind by Barbara Strauch, read by Nona Pipes. After several days of spam from AARP and women’s menopause websites, I have been more than a little sensitive about my age. In this nonfiction book, new research is presented that suggests that rather than slipping into decay and depression, the aging brain actually reorganizes and improves – allowing a more positive outlook in middle age.

How cool is that? I may have to read this just so I have ammunition to shoot to back at those who ridicule those of us over 40.

The Irresistible Henry House by Lisa Grunwald, narrated by Oliver Wyman. This one is already on my hold queue at the library. In the 1950s-60s, home economics college programs actually used real orphaned babies to teach parenting skills to women. In this novel, Henry is such a child, so sweet and charming that he is adopted by the woman in charge of the program. After a childhood of many mothers, how can he, as an adult, learn to actually trust one woman? I can’t wait to read it.

Deliver Us from Evil by David Baldacci, read by Ron McLarty. The second novel in the Shaw and James series, Deliver Us from Evil takes them into a new world of evil. Evan Waller’s business dealings could lead to millions of deaths. Shaw and James must figure out his goal and stop him. Sounds pretty exciting to me…

The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee written and read by Sarah Silverman. Sarah Silverman is hilarious. I expect this book will be full of outrageous and quite possibly offensive humor. The memoir will likely be shocking, filthy, and funny. I plan to read it. If you are easily offended, I recommend you pass.

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
