Bios, Self-Help and More.
I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali, read by Meera Simhan. In Yemen, Nujood Ali, 10 years old, was forced to marry a man three times her age to ease her father’s financial burdens. The man had promised to wait to have sexual intercourse with her until she was a woman, but threw that promise to the wind on their wedding night.
Nujood suffered physical and emotional abuse as well as nightly rape under her new husband’s roof. She escaped and went to the courthouse in the capital and with the help of a lawyer, defied the archaic system. Nujood has been honored as one of Glamour magazine’s women of the year for her courage. This is a short book, but I have a feeling it will be hard-hitting.
No Apology: The Case for American Greatness written and read by Mitt Romney. Romney adds his two cents on politics in the US. He asserts that our strength as a nation is essential to not only the US, but to the world. I assert that I am sick and tired of politician’s period. I have no desire to hear another word from any of them.
The Poisoner’s Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York by Deborah Blum, read by Coleen Marlo. First of all, I just love the title of this book. The author traces the roots of forensic science to a time when poisoning was a simply way to kill… and not get caught. As a fan of crime drama, I find this very interesting. I may just have to put it on my list.
The 4-Day Detox written and read by Ian K. Smith. This diet plan is supposed to remove toxins and cleanse your body while you lose weight. The accompanying reference guide includes sample menus. This looks suspiciously like crash diets I have seen in the past, complete with cabbage soup and psyllium husk. Cleanses are all the rage, but I’m not sure they actually benefit the body.
You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up: A Love Story written and read by Annabelle Gurwitch and Jeff Kahn. This husband and wife team takes a look at their 13 year marriage with laughter. The title sounds suspiciously like conversations in my house…
