The 2010 Edgar Awards

Nominees for Best Novel:

The Missing by Tim Gautreaux, narrated by Henry Strozier.
Set in 1920s Louisiana, this novel details the story of a department store floorwalker who is wracked with guilt when a young girl is kidnapped on his watch. His journey to find her pushes him to choose between compassion and vengeance. I’m on the fence as to whether I will look for this one…

The Last Child by John Hart, narrated by Scott Sowers.
Previous Edgar Award winner Hart returns to the list with the story of 13-year-old Johnny Merrimon. When his sister is taken from a quiet side street, his family is shattered. Johnny takes huge risks to find the truth about what happened to his sister, as does Detective Clyde Hunt who has been working the case for an entire year. For some reason, this one appeals to me. Consider it added to my list of must-reads.

Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death by Charlie Huston, narrated by Paul Michael Garcia.
Now here’s an unusual protagonist… Webster Fillmore Goodhue works on the crew that cleans up bloody, grisly crime scenes. He gets sucked into cleaning up after an attractive woman’s brother and ends up in big trouble. I like the sound of this one. I expect lots of black humor.

A Beautiful Place to Die by Malla Nunn, narrated by Saul Reichlin.2010 Edgar Awards Logo
This mystery takes place in South Africa in 1952. New apartheid laws have gone into effect and are supposed to heal the political divisions between Afrikaners and English. When an Afrikaner police officer is found dead, and an English Detective begins to investigate, the Security Branch shoves him aside and he launches his own investigation. I’m not sure about this one. I may wait to read some reviews…

Nominees for Best Novel not available in audio format:
The Odds by Kathleen George.
Nemesis by Jo Nesbø, translated by Don Bartlett.
