RRead on for an update on the 100 Stories for Haiti project, the salvation of Kirkus Reviews, and iPod book apps…

100 Stories
100 Stories for Haiti Paperback is taking preorders!
I’m looking into availability beyond the UK and will let you know. The eBook will be available from SmashWords and downloadable worldwide.

The audiobook version is still in the plans, but we are still working to find a publisher.

Kirkus Reviews
Remember a few weeks ago, when I wrote about the closing of Kirkus Reviews? Well, Herb Simon, a prominent business person and shopping mall developer, happens to be a longtime subscriber to Kirkus. As a book-lover, he didn’t want to see the publication end… so he bought it. Kirkus reviews 5,000 books per year and is used in libraries and bookstores to help decide which books to buy.

Apple App Update
If you have an iPod touch or iPhone, you have probably noticed the enormous number off applications available for your device. I’m always baffled by the huge amount of games. I get it, it’s fun to have a time-waster, and I have games on mine. But there are so many other apps out there for productivity, news, lifestyle, and books…

I was glad to see the number of book apps is getting very close to rivaling the number of games! By my quick calculations (based on the number of apps/page and number of pages of apps in iTunes), there are about 28,219 book related apps.

Finding the number of games wasn’t quite as easy. By my estimation, there are maybe 1000 more games than books. That’s actually pretty encouraging! Those are the top two categories as far as numbers of apps. C’mon, booklovers! Up those book apps!

Audiobook Trends
A study by Simba Information highlighted the changes in audiobook format over the last few years. Unlike the slow transformation that hardcover books have taken in becoming eBooks, audiobooks have become much more accessible digitally. Some independent bookstores have decreased their stock of CD audiobooks because they just aren’t selling as well. I know I prefer  audio book downloads for the convenience and for the storage.

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
