Luckily, there are several resources out there to help me make my decision. With those resources and a few suggestions, let me help you avoid that panicky feeling of not knowing what you will read next.
One of my favorite tools is found at Literature-map. All you have to do is enter the name of an author you like, click continue, and you are provided with a map of authors similar to the one you entered.
Authors who are closer to the target author (in the center) will be closest to his style. I have used this tool on many occasions and have found it to be relatively accurate.
Whichbook is another interesting way to find a new read. You simply use the sliders on the page to determine the characteristics you want in the book. It includes everything from mood to length to character traits. Once the reader has indicated preferences, the site offers recommendations. The site is affiliated with several UK libraries and those patrons may use the provided links to borrow the book selections.
Many libraries have tools on their websites for obtaining book recommendations. In most cases, you do not have to be a member of the library to use the tools. Book reviews are always a valuable source for finding new books to read. There are tons of reviews online, including here at audioforbooks.com as well as Audible.
Friend recommendations are a mixed bag. If you have a friend with similar tastes to yours, it’s probably a safe bet that you will enjoy his or her recommendations. I made the mistake of taking a suggestion from someone I didn’t know very well and ended up with a book that I couldn’t get through. Moral of the story? Read the book jacket or excerpt before committing to it.
If all else fails, check out the New York Times bestsellers list. The titles are usually very diverse and obviously appeal to a mass audience of readers.
