The Top 10 Best Selling Authors of the Decade.

by on January 8, 2010

After two days of top tens, you may be sick of lists… It seems like there are endless top ten lists out there! I just want to share one more that I came across:

The top 10 best selling authors of the decade. I find this interesting, because some of them are, well, unexpected… at least by me.

Have you listened to any of these authors’ audiobooks?

Top 10 best-selling authors of the decade:

JK Rowling1. JK Rowling
Author of the Harry Potter series. I’m sure nobody is surprised that Rowling tops the list of authors. As far as I can find, sales of the Harry Potter books topped 400 million last year! That is impressive

2. Stephenie Meyer

Author of the Twilight series. This series is aimed at the teen/tween set, and the movies have certainly pushed those kids towards the books. While, in my experience, more girls than boys are interested, one of my sons did read Twilight before he saw the movie with his girlfriend.

3. Julia Donaldson

Author of various books for children. Admittedly, I had no idea who this was! When I visited her official web page, I immediately recognized her picture books. Several editions are available on audio, such as The Giants and The Joneses, The Dinosaur’s Diary, and The Gruffalo.

4. Terry Pratchett

Author of several Discworld novels, as well as other fiction. Yes, I will admit that I have not read any of Terry Pratchett’s work. However, I do plan to read Good Omens, the book that he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman! It’s on my list. Just don’t ask how long the list is, okay?

5. Jamie Oliver

Author of several delectable cookbooks. I have looked through quite a few of his cookbooks and I have his app on my iPod, but I didn’t expect him to show up on this list! With competition from Rachael Ray and Paula Deen, who would have thought he would out-sell them?

6. Dan Brown

Author of The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, and more. As with JK Rowling, this surprises no one, I’m sure.

7. Enid Blyton

Author of many children’s books. Here’s another author that I did not recognize until a search. How could I not know the creator of the character Noddy? She wrote literally hundreds of books for children…

8. Bernard Cornwell

Author of historical novels. I am not a huge historical fiction reader, but I recognize Cornwell’s name as well as those of his books. In fact, I believe I had Heretic in my hand just recently…

9. Alexander McCall Smith

Author of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. I know I’m in the minority, but I read the first book and gave up. These just weren’t for me…

10. William Shakespeare

Author of… okay, do I really need to explain? But, truly, isn’t it amazing that Shakespeare is one of the top ten best selling authors of the decade? Of course, we don’t know how many purchases were educational institutions…

Reading and writing are my passions. I read a lot of paper books as well as listen to audiobooks utilizing playaways from the local library. I listen to most of my audiobooks on my iPod. I read about one book/week and am rarely seen without one in hand. Come along and discuss this article in our friendly community forum.
