Google News
Google has been dealing with blowback from their scanned, uploaded books for awhile, but on January 9, they met the demands of writers in China. Google agreed to “respect the wishes of any Chinese author who hasn’t authorized their books to be scanned” as stated in a letter to the China Writers Association. Google is also expected to propose compensation for Chinese authors whose work was used without approval. This move is apparently an effort to avoid costly litigation.
Children’s Book Recall
Big Rex and Friends is a cloth picture book produced for young children. A red plastic dot sewn into the book contains very high levels of lead and poses a danger to children. Instructions for returning the book for a refund may be found on the St. Martin’s Press website.
Adult Book Recall
Okay, I thought this was a joke at first, but sadly it is not. Six DIY (do it yourself) books have been recalled: Sunset Basic Home Repairs, Sunset Complete Home Wiring, Sunset Complete Patio Book, two books sold under Lowe’s name, one book sold under AmeriSpec name. Reportedly, these titles “contain errors in the technical diagrams and wiring instructions that could lead consumers to incorrectly install or repair electrical wiring”. Basically, if you follow the instructions, you are risking an electrical fire. Now, theses books aren’t new. Some of them have been around since 1975!
iTunes Audiobook of the Month
Each month, iTunes releases one audiobook at a special, reduced price. This month’s selection is The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I read this book when it was first released. It was heartbreaking. The protagonist, Susie Salmon, watches from heaven as her family deals with her disappearance and her murderer wanders free. It was well written, but very sad… which is why I won’t see the movie. I’m more interested in uplifting stories right now.
More iTunes Audiobook Specials
In the spirit of “New Year New You”, iTunes has taken 40 of their bestselling self-improvement books and reduced their prices to $6.95 USD. Books from Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Eckhart Tolle, and Esther and Jerry Hicks, among others, have been listed.
