Five Non-fiction Titles to Read This Winter.
The New York Times Book Review included its list of the 10 best books of 2009 on Sunday. Yesterday, I discussed the 5 best fiction titles. The nonfiction list includes a memoir, a biography, and more. Which audiobooks will you read this winter?
The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science by Richard Holmes (no audiobook version available). This is the history of the men and women who made discoveries and created inventions during the 1700-1800s. It includes the story of William Herschel and his sister, Caroline, who forever changed our view of the solar system. It also includes the story of how Humphry Davy invented the miners’ lamp through his experiments with gases. For those interested in the origin of some amazing knowledge, this sounds like a good bet.
The Good Soldiers by David Finkel and read by Mark Boyett. Washing Post reporter David Finkel tells the story of the 2-16 battalion, deployed to Baghdad in the surge of 2007. Finkel went with the soldiers and recorded their story in this book. Based on the summary and reviews, this is a book that we all should read…
LIT: A Memoir by Mary Karr read by Renee Raudman.Karr began her story with The Liars’ Club and Cherry, and continues with LIT. Motherhood, alcoholism, and God all play a part in her story. With such heavy subject matter, Karr manages to make her story funny – without self-pity or sentimentality. I definitely need to read all three of these. How did I miss them?
Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World by Liaquat Ahamed read by Stephen Hoye.Ahamed presents the stories of the most powerful bankers and their influence on global finance just after World War I. The parallels with out current financial situation are hard to miss…
Raymond Carver: A Writer’s Life by Carol Sklenicka (no audiobook version available).Twenty years after his death, the American short story writer’s life story is told. Carver’s turbulent life and great talent are presented in this intricate biography. Against all odds, the young man with limited education and a complete lack of financial stability became a great writer. The author gleaned information from interviews with acquaintances of Carver as well as ten years of research.
There is such diversity in this list! I love that so many subjects are presented. Check Out Audible for all the latest releases.
