Audio Book CouponsFive Fiction Titles worth Reading.

This weekend, the NY Times Book Review released its list of the 10 best audio books of 2009. They chose 5 fiction and 5 nonfiction titles.

In other words, if you want to be an authority on the best of the best of 2009, these are the books to read. Today, I am presenting the list of fiction titles. Tune in tomorrow for nonfiction.

Fiction:

Both Ways is the Only Way I Want It by Maile Meloy. Currently unavailable in audio format, this collection of short stories is packed with emotion. The eleven stories are mostly set in the American West, in small town settings. Flawed characters, irrational behaviors, and emotional journeys abound. I think that I may have mentioned that despite my dislike for short stories, I may have to read this…

Chronic City by Jonathan Letham read by Mark Deakins. This novel is set in an alternative-reality Manhattan, filled with quirky characters and bizarre ideas. The main character is Chase Insteadman, a former child star who is living off of his sitcom residuals. When he meets Perkus Tooth, a pop critic with a penchant for mammoth cheeseburgers and extremely potent marijuana, things get very interesting. Guess what book I just picked up at the library? Yup. It’s on my shelf right now.

A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore narrated by Mia Barron. Set in 2001, this is the story of a woman who takes a babysitting job for a bohemian couple even as she worries about her brother’s fate in the post 9/11 military. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?

Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls read by the author. Walls’ memoir, The Glass Castle, was a fantastic read. With Half Broke Horses, she takes on the voice of her maternal grandmother and presents a tale of America’s frontier. This is on my shelf as well!

A Short History of Women by Kate Walbert. Another title that is unavailable in audio format, this novel about feminism begins with a British suffragette during World War I who has chosen to starve herself to draw attention to women’s rights. Five generations of women continue this journey to find an answer to “the woman question”.

How many of the “best” have you read? Tomorrow, check back for my list of the 5 best nonfiction books of 2009! Check Out Audible for all the latest releases.
