So Many Choices!
I absolutely love the New York Times Book Review. When the newspaper arrives on Sunday morning that is the section I grab first.
The Holiday Books edition came yesterday and I have been poring over the titles, noting what audiobooks I have read and making a list of those I would like to read. In addition to the 100 most notable books, recommendations from various genres are reviewed.
Sadly, the list of books that I want to read is longer than those that I have read from the notable books list. In fact, I have read only one: The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood, narrated by Bernadette Dunne, Katie MacNichol, and Mark Bramhall. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and love all of Atwood’s books. She deserved to be on the list.
Of the books I wish to read, I have selected a few that I have not previously mentioned here… at least I don’t think I have. Family Album by Penelope Lively and read by Josephine Bailey sounds quite intriguing. I have only read one Lively title: The Photograph, and appreciated her story writing skills. Family Album paints a picture of an outwardly idyllic family who has suppressed an extremely damaging secret. Secrets always make intriguing reading, don’t you think?
Paul Auster wrote and narrated Invisible, another of the notable books of this year. The novel hosts three different narrators as it follows them through their lives and intertwined romances. Twisted love triangles with dangerous characters… Definitely on my Christmas list.
Not on the list of most notable, but featured in the “Fake News” category is The Onion Presents Our Front Pages: 21 Years of Greatness, Virtue, and Moral Rectitude from America’s Finest News Source. This one is not available in audio, simply because the content truly requires visuals to be appreciated. These days the real news is exhausting. I am looking forward to reading some fake news… and having a good laugh.
Another hardcover that warrants viewing is Avedon Fashion: 1944-2000. The book is a collection of Richard Avedon’s gorgeous contributions to fashion magazines. If you have never seen his work and appreciate fashion photography, this is a wonderful book.
My wish list for Christmas just keeps getting longer! Check Out Audible for all the latest releases.
