Audio Book CouponsBest Titles for This Year – Some are Surprising!

This week, iTunes unveiled its lists of the best audiobooks, apps, music, and more as well as the top sellers in each area. Interestingly, the books labeled “best” are not necessarily the top sellers… Here’s a look at the list of the best audiobooks of the year from iTunes.

Topping the “Best of 2009” list for fiction is The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley (read by Jane Entwistle). The heroine of the mystery, 11-year-old Flavia de Luce is an aspiring chemist in 1950. As strange events unfold at the old English mansion where Flavia and her family reside, she turns to science to solve the mystery. I have seen this book advertised, but never really gave it a look. Now that I know a bit more, I’m adding it to my ever-expanding list.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett (read by Jenna Lamia,  Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and Cassandra Campbell), is the story of how 3 women in 1962 in rural Mississippi come together for a common cause. I know it is supposed to be wonderful, but at the moment, not on my list.

Under the Dome by Stephen King (read by Raul Esparza) is a return to classic King. Listened to the audio and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Girl Who Played with Fire by Steig Larsson (read by Simon Vance) is on my bookshelf, waiting patiently for me to read it along with its predecessor, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Everything Matters by Ron Currie (narrated by Hillary Huber, Abby Craden, Mark Deakins, Lincoln Hoppe, Arthur Morey, Doug Wert) is a novel that has been compared to the work of Kurt Vonnegut. When Junior Thibodeaux learns that a catastrophic event will occur 30 years in the future from an unknown and mysterious voice. The story follows Junior as he figures out how to live his life with the weight of this future knowledge on his shoulders.

Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery (read by Barbara Rosenblat and Cassandra Morris) presents two disparate views of the world, one from a privileged 12-year-old brat and the other from a highly intelligent yet secretive concierge. How the two meet and affect each other promises to enlighten and entertain.
