You may have ascertained that I am a mystery/thriller junkie. I enjoy literary fiction and some nonfiction, but when pressed to choose a favorite genre, thriller wins.

One of the authors that I read regularly is John Sandford. With twenty titles in his Prey series, three in the Virgil Flowers series, and four in the Kidd series, if you haven’t started listening to his audiobooks, you have some catching up to do.

John Camp:

John Sandford is the pseudonym of journalist John Camp. A highly successful reporter for the Miami Herald and the St. Paul Pioneer-Press, he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 for a series of articles about the Midwestern farm crisis in the US. In 1999 he started writing fiction under the name John Sandford.

Lucas Davenport:

The Prey series begins with Rules of Prey and introduces the unique police lieutenant, Lucas Davenport. Davenport is independently wealthy after creating and selling a computer software company that began by developing computer games and moved on to emergency simulations for police training purposes.

He likes to wear fashionable clothes and he loves being a maverick. His contacts on the streets of Minnesota help him solve some of the toughest cases as he moves through his life and the ranks of the police force.

Virgil Flowers:

Sandford introduced Virgil Flowers in the 17th Prey novel, Invisible Prey. Referred to by Davenport as “that f*ckin’ Flowers”, Virgil seems more like a drifter than an investigator. His penchant for jeans and rock band t-shirts, his laid-back friendly demeanor, and tendency to marry and divorce on a regular basis makes him a unique and appealing character. Rough Country, narrated by Eric Conger, was released this week as the latest installment in the series.

Kidd:

Kidd is a computer hacker and career criminal specializing in industrial espionage. He tends to be witty and flip in his dialogue. He is not tortured by his illegal activities, nor is he evil. There’s a lot of computer talk in these books, so readers who are not very tech savvy may have difficulty following the plot.

John Sandford provides readers with fast paced thrillers with three very different protagonists. I suggest starting with the Prey series. What are you waiting for?
