Welcome to Grant County
Slaughter’s early novels take place in Grant County, a small area in rural Georgia. Sara Linton, pediatrician and coroner (most unlikely combination ever?), helps solve macabre and usually terrifying crimes along with Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver.
Linton and Tolliver are electric together and fans never tire of their interactions. I will do my best to control my overwhelming need to gossip about all of the ins and outs of their relationship… I don’t want to spoil it for you!
Start with Blindsighted, the novel that introduced Linton and Tolliver. When Linton discovers a young college professor brutally murdered, she teams with Tolliver to hunt for the sadistic rapist/murderer. Next up is Kisscut, a shocking tale of abuse, pedophilia, and incest.
The shock factor is ramped way up in this one! A Faint Cold Fear finds Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver investigating an apparent suicide on the local college campus. Nothing is simple in a Slaughter novel, so don’t expect this ‘suicide’ to be easily investigated. Grant County continues to be at the center of Indelible, Faithless, and Beyond Reach (Skin Privilege outside of the US).

On to Atlanta
Slaughter doesn’t restrict herself to Grant County. In Triptych, she moves the action to Atlanta in a stand-alone novel of psychological and physical violence. Fractured introduces with Will Trent, an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Trent is my favorite Slaughter character. Unusual and flawed, the listener feels his urgent need to find a killer. Narrator Phil Gigante does a fantastic job of illustrating the complexity of the characters and relationships.
In Undone, Slaughter brings Sara Linton and Will Trent together, merging her popular Grant County series with the cast of Fractured. Narrator Natalie Ross delivers a first class performance, nuanced and complimentary to the text. I am midway through Undone as I write this.
This is one of those books that puts me in the midst of a pleasing conundrum: I want to keep reading to find out what happens next… but I am parceling out the pages to make it last.
